If you have Medicare in Idaho, now is the time to start preparing for 2027. Medicare’s Annual Election Period, often called Medicare Open Enrollment, runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026. Any changes you make during this period generally take effect on January 1, 2027. I know Medicare decisions can feel confusing. Plan names, premiums, provider networks, drug lists, and extra benefits can change from one year to the next. Our goal at Anthony Insurance Group is to make the process easier by helping you understand your options in plain English. Here are the key things Idaho seniors should know before October 15. Mark these important Medicare datesThe Medicare enrollment calendar is straightforward:
Open Enrollment happens from October 15 through December 7, 2026, and changes made during this period are generally effective January 1 of the following year. The plan must receive your enrollment request by December 7. Your current plan will usually renew automatically if you do nothing. However, automatic renewal doesn’t mean the plan will stay exactly the same. It simply means you’ll generally continue into the next plan year under the new terms. Read your Annual Notice of Change
A plan that worked well for you this year may not be the best fit next year. As a practical first step, compare your ANOC with your current expenses. Think about what you paid for doctor visits, prescriptions, specialists, and other care during 2026. If you don’t receive your ANOC by the end of September, contact your plan and ask when your updated materials will be available. What’s changing with Medicare Part D in 2027?
Part D premiums may also changeA temporary Part D Premium Stabilization Demonstration helped hold down some standalone Part D premiums during 2025 and 2026. CMS has announced that this demonstration ends after December 31, 2026. That means some standalone prescription drug plans may have different premiums for 2027. The change won’t be the same for every plan, and it doesn’t automatically mean your premium will increase. Final plan-specific details should be reviewed after October 1. There is also a separate Medicare premium stabilization provision under the Inflation Reduction Act that affects how certain Medicare premium changes are handled over time. That protection does not guarantee that every plan’s premium will stay the same. Because premiums and drug costs can change, I recommend reviewing your medications every year rather than assuming your current Part D plan is still the best match. Why review Medicare Advantage plans every year? Many Idaho seniors choose Medicare Advantage plans because they combine Medicare Part A and Part B coverage, and most include prescription drug coverage. Some also offer additional benefits. Medicare Advantage plans can be useful, but the details can change annually. That’s why I encourage clients to review their plans even when they’re happy with their current coverage. Pay close attention to:
Networks can matter just as much as premiums. A plan with a low monthly premium may not be a good fit if your preferred doctor or hospital leaves the network. You can learn more about Medicare Advantage plans through Anthony Insurance Group. After October 1, our team can help you review the final 2027 plan information available in your area and explain your choices in plain English. Reviewing options doesn’t mean you have to change plans. It simply helps you confirm that your current coverage still fits your health needs, prescriptions, budget, and preferred providers. If you want a local, trusted broker to walk through it with you, Anthony Insurance Group is here to make the process simple with a personalized plan review. What can you change during the Annual Election Period? From October 15 through December 7, you can generally:
If you switch back to Original Medicare, you may also want to consider a separate Part D plan and Medicare Supplement Insurance. Medigap plans have their own rules and enrollment considerations, so don’t make a change without first understanding how the pieces work together.
